Directive 94/9/EC of the European parliament and the Council also known as ATEX
(abbreviation of French “atmosphères explosibles”) was issued in 1994 and is mandatory for Member States.
It specifies the requirements for equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres and prescribe essential health and safety requirements.
It’s applied to both electrical and non-electrical equipment.
This directive is intended for the manufacturer or the importer, and defines design, certification,
production and quality assurance, marking, operating instructions, and declaration of conformity
for the explosion protected equipment to be placed on the market.

“Equipment group I applies to equipment intended for use in underground parts of mines, and to those parts of surface installations of such mines, liable to be endangered by firedamp and/or combustible dust.
Equipment group II applies to equipment intended for use in other places liable to be endangered by explosive atmospheres.”
